The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced they would freeze the World Rankings and World Junior Rankings indefinitely to avoid shuttlers having their ranking points deducted due to inactivity on the badminton calendar.

The rankings freeze would backdate to the week the All England Championships was played in mid-March.

The world body, in their statement, also stated they would figure a way to unfreeze the rankings once the COVID-19 situation improves and the international circuit action resumes.

“We are seeking a solution to unfreeze the rankings in a staggered way to avoid any drop off points from previous tournaments causing an extreme impact to the structure,” read the statement.

The BWF went on clarify the freezing of the world rankings will not apply to the qualification system of the Tokyo Olympics, which was rescheduled to the following year.

With the Olympics pushed to 2021, the world body will also now have to reschedule the 2021 World Championships to be held in Huelva, Spain.

The world event is held annually apart from the year in which the Olympics takes place.
