Pengkritik sukan tanah air, Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim, menolak desakan untuk memecat jurulatih, Datuk Ong Kim Swee, selepas skuad negara tersingkir dalam peringkat kumpulan Piala Suzuki AFF 2016.
Beliau berkata, masa terlalu suntuk untuk pengendali berusia 45 tahun itu membuat perubahan besar, apatah lagi gagal mengumpulkan beberapa pemain utama ekoran masalah pelepasan kelab.
Katanya, adalah tidak wajar meletakkan semua kegagalan Harimau Malaysia di bahu Kim Swee yang baru memegang jawatan itu Januari lalu.
"Kalau mahu memilih presiden atau jurulatih, beri calon itu tempoh dua tahun. Kalau tidak berjaya, dia sepatutnya berundur sendiri, jangan tunggu sehingga dipecat.
"Jadi, beri dia (Kim Swee) dua tahun. Kalau tidak membawa kesan positif, dia perlu berundur dengan sendirinya," katanya.
Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM) membuat lima pertukaran jurulatih Harimau Malaysia sejak 10 tahun lalu.
Ini bermakna, barisan jurulatih Harimau Malaysia mempunyai tempoh singkat untuk mencipta kejayaan besar bagi memuaskan hati pegawai dan penyokong bola sepak negara.
"Kita sedih dengan apa yang berlaku semalam (tewas 1-0 kepada Myanmar) walaupun kita berharap mereka (Harimau Malaysia) layak ke peringkat separuh akhir.
"Kita perlu bersabar dan seterusnya berharap pemain-pemain muda, khususnya daripada NFDP (Program Pembangunan Bola Sepak Negara) dan juga skuad bawah 22 tahun, dapat mempamerkan sesuatu bagi memberikan harapan bahawa sukan bola sepak masih lagi penting dalam negara kita," kata Ketua Pengarah Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN), Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail.
Kontrak Kim Swee bersama skuad negara akan berakhir pada Januari 2018.
