Malaysian cricket players and fans from all walks of life banded together to rally against the closure of the Kinrara Oval on Saturday.

It was announced earlier that the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) would be required to vacate the Oval by the end of October to make way for redevelopment of the premise.

After voicing their disapproval on social media, the local cricket community took it to the streets as they gathered at the Oval, holding placards and chanting "Save Kinrara" and "Don't kill the game".

"We are here to show solidarity and support for Malaysian cricket to save this Kinrara ground," said co-organiser Yusri.

"We have had a lot of international heroes who have played here [over the years] such as current India captain Virat Kohli when he represented his country at the 2008 U-19 Cricket World Cup.

"The Kinrara Oval has become one of the centre stages for Southeast Asian cricket with lots of tournaments being held, including an upcoming series between Australia and Pakistan in women's cricket.

"If we don't have this kind of facility, we will definitely not get international teams coming or international tournaments being held here."

Besides losing an international appeal, Yusri said the loss of the Kinrara Oval would hinder the development of Malaysian cricket.

"We cannot afford to lose this ground because it will definitely affect Malaysian cricket badly.

"There are a lot of cricket [tournaments] happening in Malaysia, but unfortunately due to lack of grounds, tournaments can be dragged on.

"The Kinrara Oval is our main ground for international, local and state-level tournaments [which has helped promote the sport and improve Malaysian players].

"We have seen how Malaysian cricket has grown in the past decade and moved up to 27th in the world out of 95 playing nations. If we lose this ground, I'm sure we would drop in the rankings," he said.

Despite having less than a month remaining before the eviction, Yusri expressed his optimism about saving the Oval.

"I'm very optimistic that [the eviction can be overturned] if our message goes to the relevant authorities.

"I think they will consider our plea because it is a national cause and, for most of us, it is not just a ground, it is a home," he added.
