The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) announced on Tuesday that Liew Daren will be going to the 2018 Asian Games as Lee Chong Wei's replacement.
Cheam June Wei, who was initially named as Chong Wei's stand-in, was dropped in favour of the 30-year-old, who had a stellar run and bagged a bronze medal at the 2018 BWF World Championships.
Liew's participation was confirmed by BAM president Norza Zakaria after a sponsorship ceremony with Bata at Wisma OCM today, with his name among those submitted for a delegation registration meeting taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia.
"It means in the men's singles event, we will be represented by Daren and Lee Zii Jia.
"There are no other changes including the target of winning two medals. We also do not want to put pressure on the players," Norza was quoted saying by Bernama.
Other than Liew and Zii Jia, the other two men's singles players for the national contingent are Leong Jun Hao and Soong Joo Ven.
Norza also confirmed that mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying, as reported earlier, is fit to compete at the Asian Games.
