Welson Sim narrowly qualified for the men's 400m freestyle final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after finishing fourth in his heat on Thursday.

The 21-year-old clocked 3:51.78 in his heat to finish behind Australia's Jack McLoughlin (3:48.31), England's James Guy (3:50.23) and Canada's James Bagshaw (3:50.76).

His time, which was far from his personal best of 3:49.48, was good enough to edge out Cook Island's Wesley Roberts (3:56.09) for him to clinch the last spot in the final, which will take place later on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Olympic champion Mack Horton remained the swimmer to beat as he clocked 3:47.93 to finish first in heat two ahead of Wales' Daniel Jervis (3:48.18), Australia's David McKeon (3:48.86) and Scotland's Stephen Milne (3:51:65).

Another Malaysian to reach the final was Ting Jin Ping, who will be swimming in the men's S14 200m freestyle category.

Meanwhile, Keith Lim and Chan Jie did not make the cut for the men's 50m butterfly semi-finals, and Tern Jian Han is one of the reserves for the men's 100m backstroke final.
