Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad and Aznil Bidin will not be able to take part in the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships in November after the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (PABM) rejected their appeal.

The national weightlifters, who won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast earlier this year, were hoping to be exempted from the national association's self-imposed ban of not competing in any international competition until next May so they can compete and collect points to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

PABM president Ayub Rahmat previously hinted at the possibility of excluding them from the ban, which was put in place following several doping scandals involving several junior weightlifters.

However, Aznil and Azroy's hopes were dashed with the recent decision made by the PABM, making the chances slimmer for them to go to Tokyo in two years' time.

"We have to obey the order. I hope after a year, we will be able to go out and collect points," Aznil told Astro Arena.

As for Azroy, he offered a shorter answer, saying, "We respect the PABM's decision."
