Freddy Adu was once a teenage prodigy tipped to become the next big thing in world football - now he has a new home in the Swedish third tier with Osterlen.

The former United States international is back in the game after a two-year break and looking to make an impact at a modest level.

Adu, now 31, rose to prominence when making his debut as a 14-year-old with DC United way back in 2004 and scored his first professional goal at the same age in April of that year.

Such was his potential, Adu had a trial with Premier League giants Manchester United, but despite that early promise he never scaled the dizzying heights he was once tipped to reach.

Benfica and Monaco are among the plethora of clubs Adu can count on his footballing resume and the latest venture in Sweden gives him a 15th different team he will have represented.

Adu has not played professionally since being released by Las Vegas Lights of the USL Championship at the end of the 2018 season.

Posting on Twitter about his new venture, Adu wrote: "Missed this sport so much and just happy to have the opportunity to be playing again. One step at a time.

"Skipped a lot of steps in the past but now I get a chance to do it right. I’m excited and never been more ready!

"Being around these kids every day and seeing the light in their eyes honestly brought back my love and hunger for the sport and I'm really excited to have that opportunity again."
