The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) were slapped with a total fine of $56,000 by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) following a recent disciplinary and ethics committee meeting, which also saw head coach Nelo Vingada and captain Safiq Rahim being individually fined.

Of the six charges the national football body faced, four were related to the recent 2017 SEA Games held in August.

As the host nation, the FAM were fined a total of $42,500 for failing to control the crowd in three games involving Malaysia – against Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore – a game between Indonesia and Cambodia.

The offences included spectators letting off a sound bomb, throwing missiles onto the field, and chanting offensive remarks at away fans.

Their two other charges were in regard to the Harimau Malaya's 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Hong Kong in September, accumulating a total fine of $13,500.

The FAM were charged with team misconduct due to some of the national players harassing the referee towards the end of the game, and crowd trouble due to spectators throwing missiles at match officials after the game.

The same match also saw Vingada being fined $5000 for making insulting comments about the match officials and questioning their performances.

Meanwhile, Safiq was handed a $1000 fine, on top of a one-match suspension, after being sent off for making a reckless challenge during a separate qualifying match against Hong Kong in October.
