After the Malaysian contingent lost Lee Chong Wei for the Asian Games in Indonesia this August, the participation of diving star Cheong Jun Hoong is now a question mark.

The concern arose after a left knee injury she suffered over two weeks ago had yet to heal, which would affect the medal target of the national contingent at the world's second largest multi-sports event.

Abdul Azim Zabidi, Malaysia’s contingent head to the Asian Games, said Cheong’s current injury condition would only be known on Thursday after undergoing an examination with the National Sports Institute (ISN) medical team.

"I have taken note of this. We will get reports whether Jun Hoong is fit or not on Thursday from ISN.

"Of course it will affect the national contingent, but at the same time we have plans to meet the medal target we want," he told reporters after meeting with sports officials at Wisma OCM on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF) had listed 12 athletes who would take the national challenge to Indonesia.

Seven athletes were placed under category A, including sprinter Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli and Podium athlete Nauraj Singh Randhawa, while the other five were placed under category B, including sprinters Khairul Hafiz Jantan and Jonathan Nyepa.

MAF president Datuk Karim Ibrahim added that they would appeal to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (MOM) to add three more names – 110-metre hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian, pole vaulter Iskandar Alwi and hammer thrower Jackie Wong – for the Asian Games.

However, according to Azim, their participations would require the consent of the Asian Games Organising Committee and the Asian Athletics Association, as they were not included in the MAF’s initial list of athletes.
