Kento Momota underwent plastic surgery to remove scars from his face suffered during an accident he was involved in Malaysia in January.

Hours after winning the Malaysia Masters, the world number one suffered multiple facial lacerations in the mishap, which also claimed the life of the driver.

The Japanese was out of commission for a few months when he had to undergo surgery after complaining of double vision.

With the coronavirus putting a halt to the badminton season, Momota managed to fully recover and had the chance to work on his game, and his face.

"He took the opportunity during the lockdown to go for a plastic surgery. There are no scars whatsoever on his face. He is in good shape and in fact, he looks more handsome than before.

"He has also been working out. According to our report, he has done well to control his body fat. In fact, his physical condition is better than before. Fortunately for Momota, the Olympic Games has been postponed to next year.

"It has given him time to heal and recover completely," Japan head coach Park Joo-bong told The Star.

The head coach was, however, a little concerned that his shuttlers had not resumed centralised training, due to the fact all the players returned to their respective clubs when the lockdown was imposed in the country.

With so many guidelines in order, the clubs were hesitant to release their shuttlers but Park was hoping to have all of them back by the end of June.

The South Korean was also hoping for the world body to amend their regulations for top players, including Momota to feature in all the top-tier events once the season resumes in August.

"Our top players can’t play in all competitions, so we’re waiting for a directive from the world body. Only then, I can plan the team schedule," Park added.
