Jeremy Gan and Tan Kim Her are set to be given contract extensions by the Nippon Badminton Association with the Tokyo Olympics having been pushed to 2021.

The contracts of the two Malaysian coaches, who have played key roles in Japan's mixed doubles and men's doubles departments respectively, expire in March next year but they look set to set beyond their existing terms.

"I want everyone to continue. I think Park Joo-bong intends to do so, and so does the rest of the coaching staff," said the Japanese national badminton body's Kinji Zeniya.

Park heads the Japanese national team and is determined to see his shuttlers dominate the badminton events on home soil next year.

To date, Japan have won three medals at the Olympics since badminton made its debut in 1992.

Women’s doubles pair Mizuki Fujii-Reika Kakiiwa won silver in London in 2012, while Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi clinched the country’s first gold four years later in Rio.

Nozomi Okuhara also won bronze in the women’s singles that year.

Japan’s best bet for gold next year will come through world number one Kento Momota, but Gan and Tan are also strong bets to contribute to the golden glitter through their players.

Men’s doubles stars Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda and Yuta Watanabe-Hiroyuki Endo are the top five world pairings and podium contenders, while Gan has Yuta-Arisa Higashino in the top five of the mixed doubles category.

Gan will be joined by former Malaysian doubles specialist Lee Wan Wah in his mixed doubles team once national training resumes post-COVID-19.

Lee was roped in as the junior doubles coach last year before being promoted to train Japan’s National B mixed doubles team.
