Lim Chong King was one of several national shuttlers playing their first match of 2020 and the youngster did not dissapoint with a 21-15, 21-14 victory over Low Eu Cong at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitational Championships on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old, one of the favourites to win the Division 2, lived up to his billing with a composed display to clinch victory in 36 minutes.

"It's my first tournament of the year, so it's good to start off with a win. I'm not playing at a 100 percent just yet, but it should be only a matter of time before I get there.

"My only concern is that fatigue will creep in as I could be playing up to 10 matches. But I'm determined to qualify for the Division 1 event next week," Lim told Stadium Astro.

The promising youngster is touted for big things to come on the back of an exceptional 2019.

He won the Hellas Open with a victory over teammate Aidil Sholeh in August, and also made the semifinals of the national championships and Malaysia International Series.

Lim, who has 54 career wins so far, also trains with the seniors in the national team.

Leong Jun Hao, who is also tipped to qualify for the Division 1 event next week, was put through his paces before overcoming Ter Chun Long 20-22, 21-16, 21-14.

"I started off slowly but I am the type who takes awhile to get warmed up. Plus he's my teammate so we know each other's game. It was good to get off to a winning start," said Leong.

The round robin format will see the top two shuttlers from the second division join the national elite shuttlers when the Division 1 kicks off next Wednesday.

The national body are offering a RM5,000 prize purse for the division winners.
