Liew Daren and the Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying pair were among Malaysian shuttlers to be eliminated from individual events at the 2018 Asian Games on Friday.

Liew suffered a surprise defeat to South Korea's Heo Kwang Hee, who was ranked 79th in the world, losing 8-21, 22-20, 14-21.

The 2018 BWF World Championship bronze medalist looked uncomfortable on occasions and made plenty of unforced errors to award points to his opponent.

Earlier in the mixed doubles event, Chan and Goh were eliminated by Hong Kong's Reginald Lee and Chau Hoi.

The Malaysian pair, who had a 3-1 record against Lee and Chau going into the match, lost the first set 17-21 before bouncing back in the second set 21-19.

The third set went past the 21-point mark before the Rio Olympics silver medalists succumbed to a 26-28 loss.

Malaysia suffered one more mixed doubles defeat to Hong Kong later in the day as Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai were defeated 21-14, 11-21, 20-22 by Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet.

It was their second defeat to the Hong Kong pair, having lost at the Malaysian Masters earlier this year.

Following their Malaysian compatriots out of the exit door were Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean, who lost 17-21, 21-16, 19-21 to India's P. Ashwini and N. Sikki Reddy in the women's doubles event.

The only Malaysian representatives remaining are Lee Zii Jia, who beat Pakistan's Azeem Sarwar 21-13, 21-10 to book a meeting with world no. 5 Son Wan-ho, and the men's doubles pair of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, who will be in action against Nepal's Bikash Shrestha-Nabin Shrestha on Saturday.
