Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron Chia will show Kevin Sanjaya-Marcus Fernaldi no mercy after the men’s doubles pair beat Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong 21-19, 21-18 on Tuesday for a potential second-round collision course against the Indonesians.

Soh-Chia were outstanding in their 33-minute victory over their more experienced Malaysian compatriots, being sharper, faster and more clinical during the crucial points for the win.

"We are satisfied with this win. They are our seniors and we trained with them a lot when they were in the national setup. The better pair had won," said Chia.

Even Goh conceded their former team-mates’ superiority, saying: "We wanted to start the year with a win, but they were quicker today and it showed."

The win moved the world number eight pair into the second round, where they await the winners between Kevin-Marcus and Taiwanese qualifiers Lin Chia-yu-Yang Ming-tse.

The Indonesians are heavy favourites to dispose their opponents, and Soh is awaiting the defending champions' challenge.

"We will show them no mercy. This victory has given us a confidence boost and we are eager to overturn our losses to them. Hopefully the home support will work in our favour," he said.

The Malaysians had lost to the world number one pair twice last year, but they would be encouraged by the fact they dragged the Indonesians to three games on both occasions.

Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi joined Soh-Chia in the second round after they ousted Indian pair Rankireddy Satwiksairaj-Shetty Chirag 21-15, 18-21, 21-15, booking a meeting with the winners of Han Cheng Kai-Zhou Hao Dong versus Jones Ralfy-Peter Kaesbauer.

In the men’s singles, Liew Daren checked into the main draw after overcoming both his qualifying matches.

The 32-year-old overcame India’s Subhankar Dey 21-15, 21-15, before he upstaged China’s Zhao Jun Peng 21-15, 21-15.

Despite the wins, Liew wasn’t sure he would feature against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie after hurting his back against Zhao.

"It depends on my condition, but I hope to play and give my best. I was already feeling the pain in the second game, but managed to control it. Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow [Wednesday]," said Liew.
