Malaysian hammer thrower Jackie Wong Siew Cheer has his eyes on winning a gold medal and setting a new national record at the SEA Games in the Philippines.

The 27-year-old Sarawakian should not have a problem to defend the gold medal he won in Kuala Lumpur two years ago, when he also set a Games record of 65.90m in his event.

After setting a new national record of 68.22m at the 2019 Malaysian Closed Athletics Championships in August, he had undergone intensive training in Makpo, South Korea, since September.

"Our goal of training in Korea was to train with their athletes to get past the 73m mark.

"Besides training, I also participated in competitions over there and competed with their athletes," he told Astro Arena.

He acknowledged that there were minor concerns about his performances of late, but he insisted that he would be physically and mentally fit for the regional meet.

"My condition is getting better despite a slight dip in form since the Malaysian [Closed Athletics] Championships.

"It is improving and I will be able to give my best performance at the SEA Games," he added.
