Women's World Cup 2019: USWNT jerseys setting sales records

The United States women are making a splash in more ways than one.

Nike and Fanatics, both licensed jersey sellers, reported that jerseys for the U.S. women's national team have sold far more than any U.S. soccer jersey, including the men's team, according to ESPN.com.

On Nike.com, the U.S. women's home jersey is the top-selling overall soccer jersey in one season, while Fanatics reported that the women's jersey sales have increased by 500% in 2019 versus the Women's World Cup in 2015.

"It's hard to overstate how important this year has been to the evolution of the women's offense at Nike," president and CEO Matt Parker said. "The business grew double digits in fiscal '19, accelerating in the back half of the year. Our momentum in women's [sports] is a great example of how our renewed focus is really moving the needle through thoughtful design, powerful brand messages and digitally-led distribution."

Nike said the success of the women's team, combined with them wearing merchandise from the company, has contributed to the sales. Interestingly, the brand's sports bra sales have skyrocketed, with the company being pushed to the No. 1 position in market shares for that particular garment.

After Tuesday's 2-1 semifinal win over England, the U.S. will be in the World Cup final for the third consecutive time and looking to repeat its title from 2015. Parker said the numbers will be even greater if the team wins the World Cup again.

"For me, personally, the groundswell of support around the world for the athletes and teams has been truly inspiring," Parker said.
