Super League's Magic Weekend has been postponed due to the coronavirus crisis, though the league intends to keep the event within the 2020 schedule.

Along with the majority of professional sport across the globe, Super League suspended its season in March amid the ongoing pandemic.

Magic Weekend was due to take place at St James' Park in Newcastle on May 23 and 24, but - with no sign of when sport will be able to resume - it has now been pushed back.

No confirmation of a rescheduled date was supplied, though Super League remains committed to hosting the event this year, whether at St James' Park or an alternative venue.

"It's regrettable that Super League has had to make this decision - but in light of the current situation, it is sadly unavoidable," said Super League executive chairman Robert Elstone.

"Our fans will be disappointed because they were all looking forward to returning to Newcastle; however, Magic is still firmly in our plans for 2020, with St James' Park, at a later date, one of the options being considered."

It remains to be seen how the Super League season will be completed, with the possibility of playing three matches a week having been suggested by Leeds Rhinos CEO Gary Hetherington.

While Super League is still hoping to hold Magic Weekend, the Rugby Football League (RFL) has confirmed the Championship's Summer Bash - due to be held in Blackpool on May 30 and 31 - has been cancelled.
