Brisbane Broncos star Darius Boyd will retire from rugby league at the end of the 2020 NRL season.

Boyd, 32, is a veteran of 317 NRL games, with 186 of those having come during two different stints with the Broncos.

He has also played 23 Tests for Australia and made 28 appearances for Queensland in State of Origin.

Boyd, about to enter his 15th NRL season, confirmed on Friday the campaign would see him bow out.

"This 2020 season will be my last in rugby league," Boyd said.

"My body feels great, I'm still excited about playing, but I'm also excited about the next chapter of my life. And I will go into that next chapter so grateful for everything that has happened over my 15 seasons in the NRL.

"I've been fortunate to have some great times in footy – a premiership in my first year with the Broncos, a premiership at the Dragons, State of Origin series wins that will stay with me forever, and the honour of playing for my country.

"I grew up a Broncos supporter and I was lucky enough to captain this great club. But you can only do those things because of team-mates, coaches and management. I'm grateful for them all."

Boyd's NRL career started with the Broncos in 2006, when they won the Grand Final, before having stints with the St George Illawarra Dragons (2009-11) and Newcastle Knights (2012-14) and then returning to Brisbane.

Broncos head coach Anthony Seibold lauded Boyd's contribution at the NRL club.

"Darius is a legend of the game and the Broncos' club," he said.

"He has achieved every accolade in the game possible, and still has plenty left to contribute to our team in this, his final year."

The Broncos begin their 2020 NRL season against the North Queensland Cowboys on March 13.
