Hurricanes star Ardie Savea is set to miss most of the Super Rugby season after confirming he will undergo knee surgery.

Savea, 26, suffered the injury during New Zealand's semi-final loss to England at the Rugby World Cup.

The 44-time All Black will miss most of the 2020 Super Rugby campaign, he revealed.

"Thought I'd let you guys know that I'll be getting surgery on my knee that I injured in the semi-final," Savea wrote on Instagram.

"Unfortunately will be out for 5-6 months so will miss majority of the Super Rugby season with my Canes brothers.

"Pretty guttered when I found out even though I thought I'd be sweet if something like this happened. I'm good now just been partying and relaxing and now will wait for surgery."

The Hurricanes reached the Super Rugby semi-finals this year before losing to eventual champions the Crusaders.

They will begin their 2020 campaign against the Stormers on February 1.
