Blake Green has joined the injury-hit Newcastle Knights for the rest of the NRL season.

The 33-year-old playmaker's move to the seventh-placed Knights was confirmed on Tuesday after he was granted a release from his New Zealand Warriors contract.

Newcastle will be the much-travelled Green's seventh NRL club and he has also spent spells with Super League clubs Hull KR and Wigan Warriors.

The addition of Green is a big boost for Knights coach Adam O'Brien, who is without Connor Watson, Andrew McCullough and Jayden Brailey due to injury.

O'Brien said: "I know he and Mitchell Pearce will complement each other. They share a lot of similar traits. They are educators and fiercely competitive.

"I have a responsibility to the players who are working their backsides off to keep fighting every day and give ourselves the best chance to win.

"We also have a responsibility to our supporters, sponsors and town to compete each week and strive for success.

"Blake's arrival helps us continue our fight and it's something he’s excited to be part of."
