Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan is one of the greatest kickboxers of this generation.

On Sunday, 13 October, the Armenian-Italian superstar faces Samy “AK47” Sana in the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final at ONE: CENTURY PART II.

Thanks to his cerebral approach to his matches and the surgical precision of his strikes, “The Doctor” has become one of the most distinctive nicknames in the sport.

The Milan resident was only a teenager when he first got the nickname.

“I was given the nickname ‘The Surgeon’ by a referee in 2004 when I fought against a French guy. I knocked him out in the first round with four low kicks,” Petrosyan said.

“It looked like a single kick while it was, in fact, four different kicks – same target, same stance, same technique. From ‘The Surgeon,’ it then turned into ‘The Doctor.’”

Over his illustrious career, Petrosyan has perfected the art of the counterpunch, and the 33-year-old is the master of accuracy and efficiency.

“Accuracy is crucial because you can’t just wing it in the ring,” he said. “There are some spots where you should strike your opponents – it can’t be random. So if you are fast and accurate, then you do have a bit of an edge.”

This “edge” the featherweight talks about earned him two K-1 World MAX Grand Prix World Titles and the reputation as the best kickboxer in the world.

But the man from Italy also has another tool in his medical bag. He is one of the few athletes who has successfully married the defensive style of Muay Thai with the offensive skills of kickboxing.

“We took a little bit of Muay Thai’s defensive techniques and kickboxing’s punching,” Petrosyan said. “We mixed all of that together for my style to be successful in the ring, and the fans seem to enjoy it.”

Despite all his success, the kickboxing legend never rested on his laurels and is on a constant quest for improvement.

“I keep working on my shortcomings and flaws day in, day out, and I’m always looking to keep improving and get better,” he said.

Petrosyan will put his clinical striking to work against fearsome Frenchman and fellow finalist Samy “AK47” Sana in Tokyo, Japan on 13 October.

If he emerges the winner, it will be yet another glowing endorsement to his reputation as the greatest kickboxer on the planet.
