Callum Shinkwin overturned a two-shot deficit in the final two holes before going on to beat Kalle Samooja in a play-off at the Cyprus Open.

Shinkwin was needing something special to catch Samooja when he reached the 17th tee, and a birdie put him within touching distance.

A slice into the rough on the last hole seemed to have cut his chances, only for Shinkwin to convert a 54-foot putt for eagle to close off on 63 and 20 under par.

Samooja could then have snatched victory with an eagle from close to the same spot when he reached the 18th, but the Finn had to settle for a birdie which meant extra holes were required.

Shinwkin's birdie put pressure on Samooja in the play-off, as they played the 18th again, and a three-putt handed his English opponent a maiden European Tour title from his 112th event.

"It's something I've always wanted to do and now I have," Shinkwin said. "It's been a bit of a shock but it feels great. I felt relaxed all day, I felt great."

Jamie Donaldson, Garrick Higgo and Robert MacIntyre shared third place, finishing on 18 under, one clear of Jason Scrivener, Dale Whitnell and Samooja's compatriot Sami Valimaki.
