Patrick Reed, Marc Leishman and Rory McIlroy all made moves at the Masters as the wheels came off Tiger Woods' challenge in spectacular fashion during the early stages of his second round.
American Reed, playing in Friday's final group, started his round with three consecutive birdies to claim the outright lead at six under par.
A bogey at the fourth ensured Reed shared top spot with Marc Leishman, the Australian having also birdied his first three holes.
Reed and Leishman were one ahead of McIlroy, who turned in a one-over 37 before making consecutive gains at the 13th and 14th to resurrect his challenge, and Jordan Spieth.
Overnight leader Spieth started terribly, dropping three shots in the first two holes, and was four over for the day through seven. However, birdies at 13 and 15 got the 2015 champion right back in the hunt.
Dustin Johnson had moved up to two under for the tournament, while Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm were also motoring up the leaderboard, both men reaching one under.
Yet Woods, who began the week with a 73 on his return to Augusta, endured misery at the fifth hole as he made a double-bogey six and slumped to four over.
The four-time Masters champion went right off the tee and whacked his second over the left of the green and into bushes. After a lengthy search to find his ball, Woods took a drop and punched the follow-up shot into a bunker where, to his credit, he got up and down. The six left him hovering just above the projected cut line.
