Andrew Wiggins was not happy with his performance this season.
Wiggins, who recently completed his fourth NBA season with the Timberwolves, averaged 17.7 points per game, shot 43.8 percent from the field and knocked down 33.1 percent of his 3-point attempts in 2017-18. Wiggins averaged more than 20 points his previous two seasons.
“I didn’t have the best season,” Wiggins said (via the Pioneer Press). “Learned a lot, but I don’t think I had the best season. It’s motivation for the summer.”
Wiggins was the top pick by the Cavilers in the 2014 NBA Draft but was quickly sent to Minnesota in the Kevin Love trade. He had a career year in 2016-17, averaging 23.6 points per game while shooting 35.6 percent from 3-point range, but regressed offensively this season.
“I know next year will be better,” Wiggins said.
Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau said he saw Wiggins make improvements this season on the defensive end and as an all-around contributor.
“I think we saw down the stretch him playing a more complete game,” Thibodeau said. “I think he can build off that.”
Wiggins signed a five-year contract extension, worth a reported $148 million, with Minnesota in October.
The Timberwolves finished the season with a 47-35 record and made the playoffs for the first time since 2003-04. Houston eliminated Minnesota in the first round in five games.
