LeBron James will sit out the Los Angeles Lakers' match against the Denver Nuggets on Monday after re-aggravating his right ankle injury.

James was benched late in the Lakers' 121-114 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday with right ankle soreness.

The four-time MVP had missed 20 matches due to a right ankle injury until recently returning and the Lakers will not risk his health as they battle for playoffs seedings.

The Lakers have dropped three consecutive games coming into Monday's meeting with the Nuggets, as well as losing six of their past seven.

James said on Sunday that he would prioritise getting fully fit over returning too soon in a bid to improve the Lakers' seeding.

LA's recent poor form has seen them slip down to seventh spot in the Western Conference with a 36-28 record.

The Lakers are already without guard Dennis Schroder because of an exposure to a postive COVID-19 test.
