Clippers center DeAndre Jordan's name has been at the center of potential trade talks involving the Mavericks but he may not be the answer to turning around Dallas, at least according to Shaquille O’Neal.
"He could help them, but I don't think it'll get Dallas back to where they used to be very, very prominent, winning championships," O'Neal said Thursday in an interview with 105.3 The Fan's Shan and RJ show (via SportsDay).
"It's not a big-guy league anymore, and DeAndre Jordan is pretty much just a shot blocker. You really can't throw the ball to him in the post and have him get you big numbers every night. Plus the guys he's going to be playing against are going to be shooting jumpers."
ESPN reported Thursday that the Mavericks have made Jordan their primary target as free agency nears, but he has to decide whether he will opt into the final year of his contract with the Clippers by 11:59 p.m. ET Friday. It's possible he could pick up his $24.1 million player option for the 2018-19 season in an effort to facilitate a trade.
"Free agency has always been enigmatic. Guys are going to make decisions that are best for them and their family. I just hope that they keep the competitive spirit," O'Neal added.
Jordan has spent all 10 of his NBA seasons with the Clippers, averaging 12 points and 15.2 rebounds per game in 2017-18.
