The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are not thinking of the worst case scenario when they apply for a special permission from the National Security Council (NSC) to send national shuttlers for the Asian leg of the World Tour from January 12th to 27th.

The badminton season is set to restart in January with two Thailand Open tournaments followed by the backdated 2020 World Tour Finals in Bangkok.

But there is a possibility the national shuttlers may not be able to go if the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) gets extended until next year.

The NSC on Wednesday had not allowed Malaysian Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim to travel out of the country for the AFC Champions League in Doha, Qatar as the country’s borders remain closed.

If the CMCO is prolonged to January due to the high COVID-19 cases, the Malaysian shuttlers could also miss out on the much awaited restart.

"We do not want to look into that possibility at this point. We will go ahead with our plan to apply for special permission through the authorities. We applied the same way for the Thomas Cup and got permission. So we will do the same.

"I don’t think it will be a problem. We will be taking all the precaution and the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) also require the players and officials to undergo a few COVID-19 tests over there. If we are needed to quarantine upon returning home, we will do so.

"Our government is not unreasonable, so at this point we do not want to focus too much on matters beyond our control," BAM secretary-general Kenny Goh told Stadium Astro.

The BAT have set strict regulations in place ahead of the tournaments. Every player and team official must produce a negative COVID-19 results 72 hours before arrival in Bangkok and then undergo a 14-day mandatory quarantine.

All personnel involved in the tournament will also have to undergo several COVID-19 tests throughout their stay.

All players and officials must arrive in Bangkok by January 4 for the quarantine period. If their COVID-19 results are negative within a week, they can participate in the tournament.

Malaysia's top shuttlers including Lee Zii Jia, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong are expected to compete in Thailand.
