Fokus Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM) tertumpu kepada wakil beregu lelaki dan campuran negara dalam tempoh lanjutan kelayakan Sukan Olimpik Tokyo bermula minggu pertama tahun 2021.
Menurut Pengarah Kejurulatihan BAM, Wong Choong Hann, yang menyifatkan skuad perseorangan lelaki dan wanita serta beregu wanita tidak mempunyai masalah untuk merebut slot ke Tokyo, memandang mereka mempunyai beberapa kejohanan kelayakan nanti.
Dalam satu kenyataan, Persekutuan Badminton Dunia (BWF) melanjutkan tempoh kelayakan Olimpik bermula minggu pertama hingga ke-17 tahun depan, merangkumi kejohanan terpilih yang ditunda, dibatal dan digantung sebelum ini, susulan wabak Covid-19.
Bagaimanapun, enam kejohanan yang dijadualkan semula bagi penghujung 2020 di bawah kalendar kejohanan badan induk itu yang dirombak semula tidak termasuk dalam proses kelayakan.
"Mengenai situasi terkini yang dikeluarkan oleh BWF, kami yakin beregu lelaki dan campuran masih lagi memiliki peluang untuk layak ke Sukan Olimpik dengan memastikan beberapa kejohanan yang perlu disertai bagi mengutip mata kelayakan," kata Choong Hann.
