Leong Jun Hao set his sights of giving senior shuttlers a run for their money after being crowned Division 2 champion of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Invitational Championships on Friday.

The former Asian Junior champion kept his nerve to overcome Lim Chong King 21-19, 21-16 in 34 minutes to end the round-robin competition with a perfect record.

Leong had defeated Wyman Goh, Low Eu Cong, Muhammad Shaqeem Eiman dan Ter Chun Long to amass 253 points in total.

“It was one of my best games so far. I felt confident throughout the tournament and kept my focus throughout the match.

“It was a challenge at times, because we haven’t been competitive in a while and we have played so many matches in a few days. I will prepare for the first division next. The opponents are my seniors, so it will be more intense,” said Leong, who received RM5,000 for his efforts.

The victory also enhanced the portfolio of the 21-year-old, who did well for the national team at the Asia Team Championships in February.

Leong, who was playing as the third singles player, won both his group matches including against the higher ranked H.S. Prannoy of India.

Lim, who will join Leong in the top division next week, admitted his team-mate’s superiority.

“I have some way to get to his level. His defence, strategy and experience showed today and I had no answer. He knew how to make a comeback even as I was leading.

“I need to learn how to be more composed in leading positions. For now, I will get a well deserved rest before preparing for the first division,” said Lim.

The Division 1 is set to be a highly charged affair with world number 10 Lee Zii Jia the favourite to win.

But with Soong Joo Ven, Liew Daren and Cheam June Wei all battling to make the Thomas Cup squad and gain valuable morale boosting victories, the competition will be intense.

Ng Tze Yong and Aidil Sholeh complete the eight singles shuttlers who will compete next week.
