Lee Chong Wei won his fifth Commonwealth Games gold medal after defeating India's Srikanth Kidambi in three sets in the men's singles final on Sunday.

The 35-year-old, who was beaten by the world no.1 in the mixed team event on Monday, lost a close first set 19-21, but went on to take the other two sets 21-14, 21-14.

Lee began the first set well, taking five straight points from the start before being pegged back by the Indian shuttler.

They kept exchanging the lead but Kidambi eventually edged out.

Despite losing the first set, Lee kept his focus and aggression in the remaining sets, not allowing his opposition to build up momentum and win more than three consecutive points.

In fact, Kidambi only managed two or more consecutive points on six occasions.

With that victory adding to his men's singles and mixed team success at Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010, Lee equalled Koo Kien Keat's record of five Commonwealth Games gold medals.
