The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have yet to decide if they will support the new 11x5 scoring system proposed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) after the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
BAM president Norza Zakaria, who was re-elected at the national body’s 76th Annual General Meeting (AGM), said discussions were ongoing between top officials including national coaching director Wong Choong Hann and junior technical director Misbun Sidek.
The BWF are set to vote on May 22 in their AGM on the new format to ramp up excitement of matches and drive television viewership.
Some of the national shuttlers as well as Indonesian players already expressed their interest in exploring the new format.
Goh Liu Ying told Stadium Astro the new format would suit experienced shuttlers, who would be more composed during early rallies action, while Lee Zii Jia also said the fast paced gameplay would be a good fit for him.
The 11x5 scoring system requires a two-third majority approval to be implemented.
It was also proposed in 2018, but failed to get enough votes for the decision.
Meanwhile Norza, who is helming BAM until 2025, vowed to continue to make positive changes for the sport.
High on his list is ending Malaysia’s wait for a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, while also faring well in major events like the Thomas Cup and World Championships.
Just last week, the BAM inked a RM55 million five-year deal with Japanese badminton manufacturer Yonex to replace previous sponsor Victor.
