Viktor Axelsen was forced to pull out of the European Championships men’s singles final after the Dane tested positive for COVID-19, handing a walkover to national team-mate Anders Antonsen on Sunday.

The world number two first tested positive after his semi-final victory over Finland’s Kalle Koljonen on Saturday, which meant he needed to take a second test.

Mark Lamsfuss also tested positive, forcing him and partner Marvin Siedel to hand the men’s doubles title to Russian duo Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov.

Axelsen, who made his fifth final this year, was gutted to withdraw.

“I'm obviously not in a good mood right now as I'd been looking forward to play the final, but also really been looking forward to go back home to Natalia and Vega who I miss a lot.

“Right now I just hope that I can get over this quick and travel back home when it's safe for me to travel,” said Axelsen, who would remain in hotel room quarantine for the next 13 days.

Antonsen, meanwhile, clinched his first European Championships title.

Carolina Marina bagged the women’s singles title after she beat Denmark’s Line Christophersen 21-13, 21-18, while Bulgarian sisters Gabriela-Stefani Stoeva won the women’s doubles crown with a 21-14, 21-19 victory over English pair Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith.

Russia reigned supreme in the mixed doubles through Rodion Alimov-Alina Davletova, who upset top seeds Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith 11-21, 21-16, 21-15.
