Goh Jin Wei did well to reach her first BWF World Tour final since returning from retirement last year, but she was no match for Nguyen Thuy Linh in the Vietnam Open final on Sunday, losing 15-21, 13-21.

The Malaysian did well to match the home favourite in the opening stages of the first game, even holding a 14-12 lead.

But the mistakes started to creep in and Nguyen, who won the Belgian International title this year, racked up the points in quick succession to take the opening game.

Goh was even more wayward in the second, committing numerous unforced errors for the Vietnamese to seal the title in 32 minutes.

Despite the loss, Goh can be proud of herself for making it this far.

In September last year, the 22-year-old announced her retirement as she struggled to make a full recovery after undergoing a stomach surgery.

But the Penangite returned to the game this year, making good strides.

She reached the semis of the International International in June, and later made the last eight of the Taipei Open and the Commonwealth Games, where she battled India’s world number six P. V. Sindhu in three close games before bowing out.

Reaching the final in Vietnam will also most likely bump Goh above S.Kisona as the highest ranked active Malaysian women’s singles shuttler.

Both shuttlers are only separated by one rung, with Goh in 50th spot.
