Former All Blacks captain Rodney So'oialo named Malaysia head coach

Malaysia Rugby Union have appointed former All Blacks captain Rodney So'oialo as new Malaysia 15s rugby head coach.

The 41-year-old, who made 62 test appearances for New Zealand between 2002 and 2009, replaced fellow countryman Brad Mika, who was in charge since 2018.

"Having a short interview with Malaysia Rugby Union's representative, he feels really excited to start the job and ready to take every challenge in order to bring glory and triumph to the team," read an official statement from the national rugby union body.

"He believes, with a proper and decent preparation, Malaysia could give a fierce fight in the upcoming tournament. ​

"Rodney hopes all of them could come and support the team all the time, especially during training and games to build a great relationship between the two parties.

"Coming from the same rugby system and culture as Brad Mika, it is easier for him to work with the players that already obtain and possess the mindset. He is looking forward to improvise some of the good work done by Brad and try to make it better for the team especially on a tactical part."

So'oialo most recently served as the director of rugby and head coach at Trinity College Kandy, Sri Lanka.
