Mixed doubles specialist Chan Peng Soon announced his split with long-time on-court partner Goh Liu Ying after 13 years of partnership together, which brought an Olympic silver medal as their career highlight.

“The BWF World Tour Finals was my last match with Liu Ying. It was not easy to make this decision, after all it’s been all these years we have been together. We failed together, achieved success together, grew together.

“Thank you to everyone who has always come out to support me and Liu Ying and stayed with us through these 13 years of our career,” he said in a posting.

Chan-Goh began their partnership in 2009 and reached their first final at the Vietnam Open that year.

Titles soon began to trickle in for the pair as they won the Badminton Asia Championships in 2010, before Chan won the mixed team gold at the Commonwealth Games that year.

In 2012, the pair reached their highest ranking of 12th, before Chan had a new partner in 2014 with Lai Pei Jing as Goh recovered from a knee injury.

Chan-Goh resumed their partnership in 2015 and went on to win three titles that year at the Polish, Russian and Mexico Open.

2016 proved to be one of their most successful year as the pair reached the 2016 Rio Olympics final, before being soundly beaten by Indonesia pair Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir.

Natsir paid tribute to Chan for their duels throughout the years.

“Thank you for being my sporty, formidable and most friendly opponent. You and Goh are part of history of my highest achievement at the 2016 Rio Olympics,” she said.

In 2017, the pair made the All-England final, but again lost in the final.

But the pair persevered and went on to win the Thailand Masters and U.S. Open in 2018, before retaining their Thailand Masters title the next year, and following it up with the New Zealand Open success.

The world number nine pair’s last outing at the World Tour Finals ended in the semi-finals after they were beaten in straight games by eventual champions Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

Besides that, the Malaysians also reached the All-England semis earlier this year.
