Thailand Open: Strong representation for Malaysia in quarter-finals

Most of Malaysian shuttlers booked their spots in the Thailand Open quarter-finals berth, headlined by the progression of Lee Zii Jia and Liew Daren in the men's singles.

Lee only needed 34 minutes to see off Kai Schaefer 21-7, 21-11 and next square off against Indonesia's Shesar Hiren Rhustavito for a place in the semis in a tournament where the odds of him going all the way looks highly likely.

With most of the big names including Kento Momota, Viktor Axelsen and K. Srikanth already out of the way, it is difficult to see Lee letting this title get away with the form he's in.

Liew also came through after another three game success, beating Koki Watanabe 16-21, 22-20, 21-11 to set up a meeting with China's Zhao Jun Peng for a last four spot.

Men's doubles pairs Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were also through after winning their matches in straight-game fashion.

Goh-Izzuddin are up against third seeds Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, while Chia-Soh have a date against Olympic champions Wang Chi-lin-Lee Yang.

In the mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai beat Indian pair Ishaan Bhatnagar-Tanisha Crasto 21-19, 22-20, setting up a showdown against Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino.

Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah also won in fairly comfortable fashion and are up against Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota next.

Women's doubles pairs Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien and Anna Ching-Teoh Mei Xing were the only ones to exit on Thursday after respective defeats.
