Lee Zii Jia gave Malaysian fans a glimpse of his upcoming performance at the Tokyo Olympics with a sharp sparring session with Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen as the shuttlers ramped up their preparations before their weekend action.
In a video uploaded by Ireland’s Education and Training Manager Daniel Magee, Lee looked sharp throughout the workout, putting the Vietnam-born Nguyen through his paces.
Not keen on exerting themselves to avoid any injuries with their opening matches looming, both players were clearly trying to get the court feel and adjust to the court drift during the session.
Lee was seen experimenting on his return shots, but he made no mistake with several decisive overhead smashes that left Nguyen without an answer.
“Today’s video is for the badminton fans. It’s not everyday you get to train against the reigning All-England champion Lee Zii Jia at an Olympic arena.
"Fantastic preparation for Nhat Nguyen today in Tokyo,” said Magee, a former Irish national men’s doubles champion, in his posting.
Fans watching the video were also impressed with what they saw from Lee, many commending that overhead smash which is set to do some damage against Artem Pochtarov (Ukraine) and Brice Leverdez (France) in Group M.
Lee will play Pochtarov in his first match this Sunday (5.40pm local time).
