Tokyo Olympics: Azreen clocks personal best on Olympic debut

Azreen Nabila Alias made a strong start on her Olympic debut as she qualified for the women's 100m first round on Friday.

The 21-year-old, who was given a Tokyo Olympics wildcard spot, set her personal best of 11.77s to finish second in her preliminary round, just 0.01s behind heat winner Fasihi Farzaneh of Iran.

Kuwait's Mudhawi Alshammari joined them in the next round as the top three of each qualifying heat and the next fastest runner advance to the next stage.

Azreen's time was the seventh fastest overall across all three preliminary heats, with Congolese runner Natacha Ngoye Akamabi setting the best time of 11.47s at the Japan National Stadium.

In the women's 100m first round, the Malaysian unfortunately finished last in her heat with a time of 11.91s, bettering only Indonesia's Alvin Tehupeiory (11.92s) and Malta's Carla Scicluna (12.16s) from other heats in the overall standings.

Meanwhile, Lee Hup Wei's third Olympic appearance came to a quick end after he struggled in the men's high jump's qualification round.

The four-time SEA Games gold medalist, who picked up an ankle injury in June, was unable to clear the 2.17m mark in three attempts.
