Atlet petanque negara, Mohd Hafizuddin Mat Daud, bersyukur dengan perhatian yang diberikan Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) terhadap sukan itu selepas kejayaan meraih pingat emas dalam Sukan Sea Singapura tahun lalu.
Jelas Hafizuddin, selepas menggondol tiga pingat perak dalam temasya di negara jiran itu, atlet petanque mula mendapat lebih banyak pendedahan dan peluang untuk menyertai pertandingan di luar negara.
Malah, Hafizuddin, yang turut meraih emas dalam acara perseorangan lelaki, tidak pernah menyangka kejayaan itu mampu mengubah nasib sukan petanque negara yang dipandang sepi sejak sekian lama.
"Selepas saya berjaya merangkul pingat emas di Sukan Sea yang lalu, MSN dan Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) kini banyak memberikan sokongan kepada sukan petanque. Kami menjalani latihan di Perancis selama sebulan, di mana kami tidak pernah menerima sokongan seperti itu sebelum ini.
"Saya melihat pingat emas yang telah saya menangi sedikit-sebanyak membantu atlet petanque yang lain di Malaysia, untuk mendapat kelebihan seperti dimiliki oleh sukan-sukan lain," jelas Hafizuddin.
Bagi Sukan Sea 2017, atlet berasal dari Kelantan berkenaan bukan sahaja bertekad untuk mempertahankan emas tetapi mahu menjadikannya lebih bermakna dengan memenanginya di depan penyokong negara.
Katanya, tempoh persiapan yang tinggal kurang setahun ini akan dimanfaat sepenuhnya untuk mencipta impak di Sukan Sea 2017.
"Untuk Sukan Sea di Kuala Lumpur, saya akan cuba mempertahankan emas kerana beraksi di tanah air. Jadi, semangat itu lebih untuk saya membantu Malaysia."
