Morgan Escare scored twice as Wigan Warriors handed Catalans Dragons another Super 8s thrashing to consolidate their place in Super League's top four.

Knowing defeat would all but end a pursuit of first-placed St Helens ahead of the sides' meeting next week, Wigan set up their 35-6 away victory before half-time thanks to a pair of quickfire Escare tries.

The Frenchman, a former Catalans player, punished the Dragons and added to their woe following a 56-6 thrashing at the hands of Warrington Wolves last time out.

Liam Marshall suffered an early injury for the Warriors, but Joe Greenwood quickly broke the deadlock, before Sam Tomkins - set to join the French side - and substitute Escare grasped control of the first half.

The former brilliantly teed up the latter for his first try, with Escare's second soon following as a Catalans error gave him a free run.

It took Tony Clubb just two minutes of the second half to add to Wigan's advantage, but the in-form Fouad Yaha then belatedly got the Dragons on the board.

Escare was denied his hat-trick on the counter, but it was only a temporary Catalans reprieve as George Williams crossed later in the same move, with Greenwood then darting through for his second.
