Latrell Mitchell showed his match-winning ability in a thumping victory for Sydney Roosters against Canterbury Bulldogs - but it did not save him from being ditched for the second State of Origin game.

Canberra Raiders' Jack Wighton has been preferred at centre by New South Wales coach Brad Fittler for the June 23 Origin game, with Mitchell ditched after a disappointing performance in the opener, when he was sin-binned during the 18-14 defeat to Queensland.

Back on Roosters duty after being afforded a short break by supportive coach Trent Robinson, Mitchell scored two tries in a 38-12 win against the bottom-of-the-table Bulldogs at the SCG.

Mitchell grabbed the first and fifth tries in the rout on his 22nd birthday, with Joseph Manu also going over twice, and Sitili Tupouniua, Drew Hutchison and Isaac Liu dotted down too. Mitchell booted three conversions and a pair of penalties.

The Bulldogs responded with converted tries from Will Hopoate and Raymond Faitala-Mariner.

That one-sided contest leaves the Roosters sitting third in the NRL table, while Manly Sea Eagles climbed to sixth after cruising to a 34-14 win against the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Dragons burst into an early 8-0 lead but Reuben Garrick got the Sea Eagles going with a 25th-minute try, dashing in at the right corner.

Garrick failed to add the conversion but booted the extras to the other five tries scored by the hosts, as Dylan Walker, Jack Gosiewski, Cade Cust, Manase Fainu and Tom Trbojevic all crossed.

Ben Hunt and Euan Aitken got the Dragons' tries, both converted by Corey Norman, who also kicked a penalty.
