Sebastien Bourdais suffered multiple fractures in a fiery crash during qualifying for the Indy 500 Saturday.

On his third qualfying lap, the French driver's No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda slammed the SAFER barrier exiting Turn 2, caught on fire and rolled once before coming to rest.

According to an IndyCar Series media release, Bourdais suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and a broken right hip in the accident, and was set to undergo surgery on his pelvis Saturday night.

The 38-year-old Bourdais has five career victories in 95 IndyCar Series races. He is a four-time Champ Car World Series champion.
