Terengganu are set to become the first Malaysian football team to have their own eSports team as they confirmed their FIFA Online 3 participation for the upcoming Red Bull Coliseum Season 2.
The Turtles, who are in contention for promotion to the Malaysian Super League, made the announcement on Saturday to compete at the tournament, in which qualifiers will be held online from October 6 to 8 and the main event at Sunway Pyramid from October 27 to 29.
In doing so, they will join the likes of Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting, Manchester City, West Ham United and Schalke to take the plunge into the growing eSports scene.
“We see FIFA eSports as a digital extension of our core business," said Terengganu chief marketing officer Syafiq Hardy.
"Many of our marketing partners are not only looking for the possibility to advertise on the official kit or at the stadium, but also want to reach the younger target group through our online channels.
"Through our commitment to eSports, we are able to create and offer entirely new activation opportunities to fulfil these wishes."
In a brief interview with Stadium Astro, Suponsa president Yunus Zakariah said Terengganu will also aim to expand their eSports team in the near future.
"We are also looking to branch out to other games such as FIFA 18 and League of Legends," he said.
"But our focus for now is FIFA Online 3 and we will take things one step at a time."
Terengganu's team of three players for the Red Bull Coliseum tournament will be finalised on September 30.
