Contrasting Thomas and Uber Cup fortunes for Malaysia
Malaysia secured their spot in the 2018 Thomas Cup quarter-finals but crashed out from the 2018 Uber Cup group stage on Tuesday.

After losing to Indonesia on Monday, the Malaysian ladies must beat China to stand a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals but were unable to overcome the 14-time winners.

Soniia Cheah went down to Chen Yufei in a close battle 21-18 20-22, 18-21, before Goh Yea Ching and Soong Fie Cho were trounced by world No.1 pair Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan 9-21, 8-21.

Goh Jin Wei offered a faint hope by beating world no.8 He Bingjia 21-9, 17-21, 21-13, but Huang Dongping and Yu Zheng sealed Malaysia's fate by defeating Vivian Hoo and Chow Mei Kuan 21-19, 21-15.

In the final game, Lee Ying Ying fell to a 16-21, 15-21 loss to Gao Fangjie.

With the defeat, Malaysia succumbed to their third consecutive Uber Cup group stage exit since 2014, leaving only pride to play for in their final group match against France on Wednesday.

As for the men's squad, despite Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong sitting out, they had no problem disposing of Algeria to secure their second 5-0 straight win.

Asian junior champion Lee Jun Hao made his Thomas Cup bow with a 21-13, 21-8 win over Adel Hamek, while scratch pairs of Arif Abdul Latif-Teo Ee Yi and Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were also given run-outs.

Malaysia will next face defending champions Denmark, who beat Russia 5-0 earlier in the day, on Wednesday to determine the Group D winners.
