Lee Chong Wei has become the latest badminton figure to propose that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) call off all their tournaments this year, on the back of a recent tennis exhibition event organised by Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian tennis star was among the players who tested positive for coronavirus during his disastrous Adria Tour, where matches were played in front of thousands and social distancing was minimal.

Referring to that incident, Lee expressed his doubt over the badminton season restarting this year and suggested the world body to start afresh in 2021.

"I think it’s fair for international tournaments to be cancelled this year. Just start fresh next year [because] it’s too risky. Just look at what happened to Djokovic and the NBA players," Lee told the New Straits Times.

The NBA saw several players test positive for the virus, including Denver Nuggets All-Star centre Nikola Jokic, amid plans to restart next month.

"I wish to avoid speculating but I’ve been hearing too many rumours. Will the Thomas and Uber Cups go as planned? Will the Olympics be postponed again?

"I know it’s important for the BWF to get tournaments running again because television rights generate revenue. But member associations like the Badminton Association of Malaysia will lose money hosting a tournament because they won’t make much from ticket sales.

"We have also yet to consider the various travelling policies. Malaysia may not have as many Covid-19 cases but what about players from other countries?" he added.

According to their latest plan, the BWF penciled August for the season to restart, with all top-tier events scheduled to resume in September despite most countries yet to lift their international travel sanctions.

Lee joined Goh Liu Ying in calling for tournaments to be played next year, with the mixed doubles shuttler also fearful of the lingering threat of the virus.
