A former Michigan State dean who oversaw convicted serial sexual predator Larry Nassar has been sentenced to up to one year in prison after being convicted of neglect of duty and misconduct, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.

William Strampel, 71, received his sentence Wednesday in Ingham County Circuit Court in Lansing, Michigan. He originally was charged with sexual assault in addition to the other charges, but was acquitted of that particular charge.

Strampel, who was dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, was accused of using his position to "sexually harass, demean and proposition students" who met with him to discuss their classes.

He also was accused of not monitoring and following up with protocols that had required another person to be in the exam room with Nassar, the disgraced former Michigan State athletic department doctor, for certain procedures and limiting skin-to-skin contact.

He was found guilty of the neglect of duty and misconduct charges two months ago, prompting his defense attorney to ask for probation for his client due to his health and the good he did for the school, including increasing the number of women admitted.

“The jury has spoken and we’re not hiding from that,” attorney John Dakmak said. “We understand he has been found guilty. To answer for that doesn’t mean we disregard a life ... of service.”

Strampel was first charged in 2017 after the Michigan attorney general's investigation into how the school handled the allegations brought against Nassar by dozens of Spartans athletes.

Medical students came forward saying Strampel made sexually suggestive and inappropriate comments during their meetings. Female students also said that he would stare at their breasts.

“Why was he so confident he could get away with it?” student Leah Jackson said in court Wednesday. “It makes me wonder how many other people he had done this to. He was supposed to protect us and he chose to betray us.”

Investigators also discovered on his work computer photos of nude and semi-nude young women with Michigan State logo piercings or clothing.

Strampel's sentencing comes more than a year after Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and MSU doctor, was sentenced to up to 175 years in state prison after more than 150 women and girls said in court that he sexually abused them over two decades.

Nassar also has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing child pornography.
