Former world number two and home favourite Vera Zvonareva bowed out in the first round of the Moscow River Cup on Monday.

Zvonareva, born in Moscow, qualified for the main draw of a grand slam for the first time since 2015 at Wimbledon this month, losing to eventual champion Angelique Kerber.

But her return home was a disappointing one as she was thrashed by eighth seed Kaia Kanepi 6-2 6-2.

Fifth seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who reached the fourth round at the All England Club for her best major finish, headed through with a comfortable 6-1 6-3 defeat of Johanna Larsson.

Wildcard Anastasia Potapova and Tamara Zidansek also progressed.

Meanwhile, Duan Ying-ying's bid for a second JiangXi Open was ended early on Monday as the seventh seed went down 6-2 6-3 to Zhu Lin.

Kurumi Nara, the fourth seed, was knocked out by Lu Jingjing, but Wang Qiang and Han Xinyun both progressed.
