Federer set to play on until 2019 after signing Basel agreement

Roger Federer has put an end to retirement talk by signing up for the Swiss Indoors Basel until 2019.

Federer has long since been asked when he will call time on his glittering career, but showed why he has opted to play on by rolling back the years to win the Australian Open last month.

The 18-time grand slam champion now looks set to carry on until the age of 38 at least, fitness permitting, after agreeing to play in the next three editions of his hometown tournament.

"I can hardly wait to step out again in front of my home crowd in autumn. To play in Basel is always one of the highlights of the year," said Federer.

The 35-year-old has won a record seven titles in Basel and featured in 12 finals in a tournament which he has also featured in as a ball boy.

Tournament director Roger Brennwald said: "We are in the privileged position of having been able to secure the participation of Roger Federer in our tournament for a further three years.

"And this directly on the back of the final in Melbourne."

The Swiss Indoors will be staged from October 21-29 this year.
