Wigan Warriors got their Super League campaign off to a winning start as they capitalised on Chris Hill's red card to edge out Warrington Wolves 16-10.

The Warriors were comfortably beaten by eventual Grand Final runners-up Salford Red Devils – who on Thursday confirmed coach Ian Watson had extended his contract – in their last competitive outing, but they showed plenty of resilience in a gritty encounter with their north-west rivals on Thursday.

Wigan fell behind to a Stefan Ratchford penalty and Ben Murdoch-Masila's try, with the former Salford man barging past Warriors new boy George Burgess in the process.

Burgess, who had looked off the pace, went off injured, though Wigan soon pulled one back through Bevan French.

The match swung in Wigan's favour in the 23rd minute when they were awarded a penalty try after Hill's high tackle on Sam Powell, with Warrington's captain subsequently seeing red.

But having stayed in the game despite their numerical disadvantage, Warrington were dealt a blow midway through the second half when Mike Cooper was sin-binned.

Wigan made it count – Liam Marshall racing over in the corner to grab a crucial try, with the Warriors withstanding a late spell of pressure to claim the two points.
