Gareth Widdop will have to wait to make his Super League debut after Warrington Wolves' marquee signing was ruled out of the start of the season.

The England five-eighth suffered a lower limb injury in training after rolling his ankle and Warrington revealed he is not expected to be available until "around round four".

Widdop will continue to be assessed by the Wolves medical team following his injury setback.

The 30-year-old returned to his homeland on a three-year deal from NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons.

Warrington travel to Wigan Warriors for the opening match of the season on January 30.
